Call for nominations

The Senckenberg Institutes asks you to nominate your favourite Mollusc species 2025!

01.01.2025 – 22.01.2025

Once again we are delighted to announce we will be continuing the International Mollusc of the Year competition sponsored by Senckenberg! This initiative was started from our LOEWE-funded Translational Biodiversity Genomics project, and while the TBG special funding comes to an end at the end of 2024, we have found support to keep Mollusc of the Year going in 2025!! Nominate your favourite species now!

This is how it works

  • YOU nominate any mollusc species for the prize, as long as you can (help to) arrange specimens suitable for genome sequencing.
  • Our panel selects the top 5 species from the nominated molluscs
  • The final winner is selected by a public online vote -- and as a prize for the winning mollusc, we sequence its complete genome

Again, this can be the subject of your research, or just a mollusc that you happen to know and love. But in order to be eligible for the final prize, we do need specimens. Although this is a competition, we love it when teams work together, so if you know a deserving species but don't have specimens, please ask other colleagues who do have material to get involved. We select finalists based on several factors, including general coolness, the scientific need, our wish to support groups (of people and molluscs) that do not have access to genome sequencing.
